Why Grind a Stump?
Left alone, a stump is a mower obstacle, a trip hazard, a termite invitation and, with mesquite especially, a source of stubborn sucker regrowth that keeps coming back. West Texas hardwood stumps decay very slowly in dry conditions; waiting them out takes decades, and digging them up tears up half the yard.
Grinding solves it cleanly: a carbide-toothed wheel chews the stump into mulch 6 to 12 inches below grade. The hole is backfilled with the grindings, the area is raked level, and you can seed grass, lay sod or plant over it.
What’s Included
- Grinding below grade, deep enough to mow over and replant.
- Surface roots, visible flare roots ground down with the stump.
- Backfill & rake, grindings used to fill the hole; extra mulch hauled or left, your choice.
- Any size, any count, one backyard stump or a whole cleared lot; multiple-stump jobs are priced with a discount.
Good to Know Before the Quote
Two things affect stump pricing most: diameter (measured at the widest point, ground level) and access (can a grinder roll through the gate?). Mention both in your request, plus anything buried nearby like sprinkler lines, and your quote will be accurate the first time.
Stump Grinding FAQ
How deep do you grind?
Standard grinding goes 6 to 12 inches below grade, which is enough to replant grass or garden over the spot. Deeper grinding for construction or new tree planting can be quoted on request.
Will the tree grow back after grinding?
Grinding removes the growth point of most species. Mesquite is the local exception, it can sucker from roots, so mesquite jobs are ground deeper and wider to minimize regrowth.
What happens to the mulch pile?
The grindings are used to backfill the hole, which settles over a few months. Extra mulch can be hauled away or left for your flowerbeds, your choice.
Can you get a grinder into my backyard?
Most residential gates are wide enough for compact grinders. Measure your narrowest gate and include it in the quote form, if access is tight there are smaller machines for exactly that.
