Tree service in Tye, TX looks different than it does in the newer parts of Abilene. Tye is a small town with older housing, and the trees around those houses have been there a long time. A lot of them were never pruned for structure and never really needed to be, right up until a limb came down on a carport. The usual situation is a mature tree, or two or three, that has quietly gotten bigger than the yard it was planted in.

Constant exposure changes how a tree fails. Instead of a clean break in one storm, you get slow damage. Hackberry does much the same. Pecan holds together better but gets brittle when it is drought stressed, and a dry summer followed by a wet spring is when we see the most pecan limbs come down. Mesquite is a different animal altogether, tough and hard to kill, but it will take over a fence line if nobody keeps after it.

The practical takeaway is simple. Out here, thinning a canopy so wind passes through it does more good than shearing it back, and a tree that already lost one big limb is telling you something about the rest of it.

Tye Local Notes: Limbs, Dumping and Power Lines

Tye sits where State Highway 84 meets Farm Road 707, eight miles west of Abilene and just north of Dyess Air Force Base in northern Taylor County. Before limbs go to the curb or into a pile, a few local points matter.

• Trees in power lines are the utility’s call first. Taylor Electric Cooperative clears its rights of way and takes reports of trees growing into its lines through a Tree Trimming Request Form, with photos so its crews can find the spot.
